“University of Telafer Launches an Awareness Program as Part of the Iraqi Anti-Drug Week”

Under the patronage of the President of the University of Telafer, Prof. Dr. Abdulaziz Ahmed Aziz, and the supervision of the Administrative Vice President of the University, Prof. Dr. Huda Ismail Khalid, the university organized an awareness program held in conjunction with the Iraqi Anti-Drug Week. This initiative comes as part of the university’s ongoing efforts to promote awareness among students and strengthen a culture of prevention against one of the most pressing issues facing society.

The event, held on Sunday, November 16, 2025, in the Martyrs of Telafer Hall, witnessed a notable attendance from members of the ministerial committee responsible for the national anti-drug program, along with a distinguished group of faculty members and students. Their presence added a rich and diverse dimension to the program’s interactive atmosphere.

The university president opened the session with a welcoming address to the ministerial committee, emphasizing the commitment of the University of Telafer to expanding awareness initiatives, creating real spaces for discussion on the health and social risks of drug use, and exploring practical solutions through workshops, seminars, and lectures conducted throughout the academic year.

Following the opening remarks, Prof. Dr. Abdulaziz Ahmed Aziz delivered a workshop titled “The Effects of Drugs on the Brain”, in which he explained the mechanisms of drug use and how narcotic substances alter the structure and functions of the brain.

This was followed by a lecture presented by Prof. Dr. Huda Ismail Khalid Al-Jumaili, the Administrative Vice President, who addressed in depth the psychological and physical harms of drugs, highlighting how awareness and guidance can break the cycle of addiction before it escalates. She emphasized the vital role of students as the first line of defense in spreading awareness within the community. A visual presentation was then shown, illustrating the stages of addiction and how it can develop unnoticed, offering attendees a realistic view of the severity of the issue.

In another segment of the program, Assistant Lecturer Asaad Mahmood Shihab delivered a lecture titled “The Role of Family and Media in Combating Drugs”, discussing definitions, types, and causes of drug use, as well as how families and the media can serve as protective environments rather than sources of pressure or deviation.

The program concluded with a lecture by Assistant Lecturer Saja Abbas Abdul-Jabbar from the Psychological Counseling and Educational Guidance Unit, focusing on drug addiction among students, addressing the causes, motivations, and available therapeutic and preventive approaches in a manner that reflects the realities of university life.

Ultimately, the program carried a clear message: the University of Telafer views drug abuse not merely as a health problem, but as a societal challenge that demands awareness, unity, and thoughtful guidance. For this reason, the university continues to support national initiatives aimed at protecting youth and fostering a safe, informed, and resilient academic environment.
