“Research Team from University of Telafer Publishes Pioneering Study in Sentiment Analysis Using Neutrosophic Logic”
A research team from the University of Telafer published a research paper titled “A Neutrosophic Approach to Improving Sentiment Classification Accuracy in Social Media Analytics” in the journal “Neutrosophic Sets and Systems” affiliated with the University of New Mexico, USA, and indexed in the Scopus global database.
The research team included Professor Dr. Huda Ismail Khalid, Assistant to the University President for Administrative Affairs, Assistant Lecturer Raad Abdul Ameer Qasim, Head of Computer Science Department in the College of Education, Assistant Lecturer Sajjad Abbas Younis, Director of Student Affairs and Registration Department, Assistant Lecturer Habib Nouri Jumaa, Security Permits Officer, and Dr. Maher Khalaf Hussein, Head of Technical Training Division at the Electronic Computer Center.
The study addressed developing an innovative approach for sentiment analysis in social media using neutrosophic logic, which transcends the traditional limitations of conventional binary and ternary classification systems. The proposed approach relies on a three-valued framework including truth, uncertainty, and falsehood, enabling it to better handle the complex nature of emotional expressions on social media platforms that may carry positive, negative, and neutral connotations simultaneously.
Experimental results on multiple datasets from social media platforms showed significant improvement in classification accuracy, where the developed neutrosophic approach achieved 15% to 20% better performance compared to traditional methods in handling ambiguous and mixed-sentiment posts. The proposed framework also showed particular effectiveness in processing sarcastic and ironic expressions and context-dependent expressions common on social media platforms.
